From Heather McClellan:

Artist Heather McClellan requests your presence at “Flex”, her Vietnamese-inspired lacquer exhibition.

Heather McClellan received her formal training in graphics and illustration at the Cleveland Institute of Art, one of the leading art and design schools in the United States. A lover of materials and methods, Heather’s work continually leads her to explore new techniques and continual learning at the feet of masters of new crafts. She works fluently in traditional media (ink, pencil, pastels, oils, and acrylics), but is also practiced in a diversity of methods (scratchboard, lithographs, ceramics, silk screens, lacquer, large murals, and mixed media). She regularly represents women as her subjects and draws her inspiration from a wide variety of cultures.

Artist statement:

Early in my career, my greatest struggle was in creating. I found that my passion for the human form and my God-given talents made it easy to illustrate, to show things “as they are”, but to me, this was disappointingly insufficient; art is so much more. It should evoke and stir others to passion. It should showcase imperfections and limitations. But most of all, it should be creative, meaning that it generates something new: an idea, a sentiment, a desire. I have found great satisfaction in experimenting across multiple techniques, perhaps because of the newness and my desire to explore, but more likely because of the imperfections they allow. Pencil and chalk are so precise that they leave little space for the beautiful accidents which manifest themselves in other media. As I force my technical skills into new and imperfect formats, I find it jarring, disrupting, exciting—and this excitement comes precisely because I don’t know what to expect. To me, this is creation.

Vietnamese Contemporary Fine Art Group Show In Brussels Belgium

Exhibition: 05 – 09 Feb 2015, 11 am – 6 pm
Tour et Taxis exhibition hall, Brussels, Belgium

From the organizer:

The Vietnamese contemporary fine art exhibition, on display from 5 – 9 February at Tour et Taxis exhibition hall, Brussels, will feature works on paper and wood, in lacquer and watercolor, by contemporary Vietnamese artists all living and working in Hanoi.

Exhibiting artists: Dinh Thi Tham Poong, Phan Cam Thuong, Vu Thu Hien, Trinh Tuan, Dinh Hanh, Vu Duc Trung, Ninh Thi Den.

The oldest, Phung Pham, is 80 years of age and the youngest, Vu Duc Trung, is 33. Trinh Tuan, considered a master teacher as well as artist, is the third male lacquer artist in the show. Dinh Hanh has, over the past decade, achieved renown for his graceful and minimalist lacquer paintings of women.

The two women watercolor artists in the exhibition, Vu Thu Hien and Dinh Thi Tham Poong, are both 44 years of age and were in the same graduating class of the Fine Arts Academy in Hanoi, and work in watercolour on handmade paper. Ninh Thi Den works in collage and Phan Cam Thuong in mineral colors on handmade paper.

The juxtaposition of handmade do paper and traditional lacquer painting with contemporary artistic techniques bridges the temporal worlds of past and present, and spans the cultural divide of East and West. Stylistic elements of Impressionism, Expressionism, figurative art, Cubism and Fauvism intermingle with purely traditional Vietnamese themes of emotional experience and spiritual values as represented by the village, the buffalo, ancient dances.

Opening: Sat 24 Jan 2015, 5.30 pm
Exhibition: 24 – 30 Jan 2015
Blue Gallery

From the organizer:

The entire life of the artist/ art educator Tran Trung Ky (1939 – 2014) has been a devotion to art and art education. He taught at art and culture school (formerly Ha Nam Ninh province and later Nam Dinh province). After his graduation from Vietnam College of fine arts major in Fine arts in 1975, because of his decent and quiet character as well his limited working area in Nam Dinh only so that besides from the students and very few friends. Not everyone has the opportunity to admire all of his works spanning from many periods from the 50s until now. Regardless of any period, material and expression language, the works of Tran Trung Ky always show a certain love and respect for the country, homeland as well as human beings through loving and simple gestures. Especially in the images of the old streets of the Southern citadel (Nam Dinh), portraits of people and landscapes in the rural area of Son Nam.Winter-Ha-Manh-Thang

From 1978 to 1984, both the works and the artist himself were traveling to international exhibition and residency in Germany and Bulgaria. He was the representative from the purely Vietnamese soul through the arts. His works were in the collection of Vietnam Fine Arts Museum as well.

At the moment, the artist/ teacher Tran Trung Ky had passed away. He is resilient to fight against the malignant cancer during the year 2014. Although in this first solo show we cannot showcase the entire works across 40 years of creation. But this is going to be a journey with distinctive works of art in many periods in order to reconstruct a portrait about the art life of special artist from the South citadel.

Exhibition “Winter Hues” By Ha Manh Thang

Exhibition: 18 Jan – 28 Feb 2015, 9.30 am – 6.30 pm
Dong Phong Art GalleryWinter-Hues-Ha-Manh-Thang-invitation

From Dong Phong Art Gallery:

On the occasion of the New Year 2015, Dong Phong Art Gallery is pleased to present several new works entitled “Winter Hues” by artist Ha Manh Thang. He has recently created these paintings with inspiration from the cold northern winter in Hanoi. This is a unique opportunity for you to see his visions of landscapes and nature from the places where the artist lives and experiences.

Below is the artist’s thought on the paintings in “Winter Hues”:

“In every scene, I’m observing the colour gradients and the passage of time in nature. The four seasons of the year each have their seasonal segments corresponding to four hues. There are myriads of colours in each hue and endless meanings to each colour.
And there are many forms to each meaning.
Every form consists of hues; and hues contain all forms at every single moment… At the moment, I’m painting Winter Hues.”Winter-Ha-Manh-Thang

Ha Manh Thang (born in 1980) has a long history of cooperation with Dong Phong Gallery ever since he was a 4th year student in Hanoi Fine Art University. Since then, he has gained lots of success, and he is by now the most important young artist in Vietnam. He was also the first artist from Vietnam profiled in the Phaidon publication “Painting Today – 2009” alongside such acclaimed artists as Gerhard Richter, Neo Rauch and Peter Doig.
