Artist Luong Duy – Vietnamese Lacquer Paintings – Nguyen Art Gallery

The Journey into Art

Painter Lương Duy (born 1972, Nghệ An) was born and raised in Hanoi. He graduated from the Mural Painting Department, Hanoi University of Industrial Fine Arts in 1998. He is a member of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association, Hanoi Fine Arts Association, and UNESCO Hanoi Fine Arts Association. Coming from a family with an artistic tradition, his father was a lacquer painter among the first generations of students at the Hanoi University of Industrial Fine Arts. From a young age (around 10 years old), he was exposed to, learned, and assisted his father in lacquer work (applying eggshell, mother-of-pearl inlay, painting…), building a solid foundation and leading him to choose lacquer as his primary medium of creation.

Currently living and working in Hanoi, painter Lương Duy pursues abstract painting, using traditional lacquer to create works imbued with deep meditation and contemplation. His paintings transport viewers into multi-dimensional spaces, blending the real and the illusory, evoking feelings of peace, profound tranquility, and boundless vastness. He utilizes the characteristic depth and stillness of lacquer to express an expansive emptiness (greens – reds – grays…), a space that holds thoughts, memories, the sound of meditation – “nothing yet everything.” His works often feature subtle “eye-catching” details such as figures curled up, hugging their knees or heads, immersed in contemplation, or multi-layered spaces that connect echoes of the past, the present life, and visions of the future.

Through the harmonious combination of traditional lacquer techniques and modern artistic thinking, painter Lương Duy has created his own distinctive mark in Vietnamese fine arts, contributing to the preservation and development of lacquer art in Vietnam. Beyond creation, he actively participates in charitable activities, most notably donating the painting “Past, Present, Future” to the Mottainai Program in 2018 to raise funds for underprivileged children.

Painter Luong Duy said: “The depth of attraction in some works are the emotional states that I want to express, show the vanity – the reality of space, of society. I take multi-layer space as the background, layout on it feelings, emotions, both real and false, as a connection between echoes of the past, present life, and future thinking.”
