A portrait of painter Nguyen Tuong Lan

Biography of Nguyen Tuong Lan

Nguyen Tuong Lan (1906-1946), is one of the four masters in the early period of Vietnamese art: “Nhat Tri, Nhi Van, Tam Lan, Tu Can”. Because of the war, Nguyen Tuong Lan’s records and information are few, and there are still relatively few of his paintings.

Nguyen Tuong Lan’s Career

Art style: Oil painting, lacquer, silk, woodcarving, gouache, charcoal.
Nguyen Tuong Lan studied in the 4th course of Indochina Fine Arts College (1928-1933). After graduating, he opened a studio in Hanoi, which is famous for its full facilities and beautiful models.

Tuong Lan has composed many works, but so far, very few of his works have survived. Perhaps that is why his image in the quartet is quite faint, even though he is a talented painter of Vietnam.
He is regarded as one of the few modern painters who can even in silk paintings put pure colors into a fictitious, symbolic, simple, and graceful harmony. His artistic approach started to veer off course in the 1940s. He draws the viewer’s attention to his art with big stripes on ornaments that are both fancy and appear to be impossible to combine.

Nguyen Tuong Lan’s Artworks

His works of art are rare because they have been lost for many years. Currently, only a few of his works are displayed at the National Institute of Fine Arts in Hanoi:
• Hiện vẻ Hoa (1935)
• Đôi bạn
• Chợ miền núi…..
