The Journey into Art

Artist Ha Huy Hiep (born 1974, Ha Tay – now part of Hanoi, native to Tot Dong, Chuong My district) graduated in Sculpture from Hanoi University of Industrial Fine Arts, currently lives and works in Hanoi. Originally trained as a sculptor, he brings a strong sense of three-dimensional form and structural thinking into his painting practice. Since pivoting to painting during the 2021 COVID-19 lockdown, he has focused on oil, acrylic, and engraved lacquer (son khac) works, often in monochrome or limited palettes, exploring human emotions, existence, inner reflections, and existential themes. His paintings feature simplified, block-like forms without horizons, creating enclosed, introspective spaces that blend fantasy, surrealism, and poetic depth—sometimes with naive or instinctual color use. His works have been exhibited at prominent galleries in Hanoi and attract contemporary art collectors.

Exhibitions & Art Events

2021: Began painting intensively during the COVID-19 lockdown; held his first solo exhibition “Đứng dậy và đi” (Stand Up and Go) shortly after months of continuous creation.
2022: Solo exhibition “Thuần hóa” (Taming); participated in group shows including “TA MANG ĐI” exhibition.
2023: Solo exhibition “Thế giới vuông” (The Square World); group exhibition with “Đan tay” group (first of the group), “Câu chuyện Hà Nội”.
2024: Group exhibition with “Đan tay” group “Khúc giao mùa” (Seasonal Transition), exploring transitions in painting.
2025: Group exhibition “Màu thời gian” (Color of Time) at 16 Ngo Quyen Exhibition House, Hanoi (with artists Nguyen Minh Chinh, Nguyen Minh Hai, and Nguyen Luong Huyen), featuring oil works like “Quan họ về”.
2025: Participated in various group and solo exhibitions with engraved lacquer, acrylic, and oil works at galleries such as Vanvi Gallery, GateGate Gallery, Dong Tan Art Gallery; series including “Thì thầm” (Whisper), “Mộng mơ” (Dreaming), “Ngẫm sinh” (Contemplating Life); “Paint the Internet Red” online exhibition (Best in Show for “Delegation”).
Ongoing: Member of the “Đan tay” artist group, participating in annual group exhibitions from 2023 onward; continues series of monochrome and engraved lacquer works exploring human introspection.
