 Bui Duc in Nostalgie
In some Asian countries, lacquer is known as a special material, used in decorating fine handicraft articles and honour the beauty and the majesty of the place of worship. Especially in Vietnam, lacquer is deeply loved by artist and is considered as a precious material for their works.

In Hanoi – the cradle of tradictional lacquer, there is a talent artist specializing in lacquer painting- painter Bui Duc. The subject in his works is often simple, plain, truthful, nostalgic and quite close to everyday life. Deeply from his soul, he loves people and natural beauty of Vietnam, therefore almost all of his paintings have been created with his own feeling and understanding of those.

Life and people in ethnic minorities are similar subjects luring him and shaking his emotion the most. The image of ethnic people and their glint are impressive and clear in his mind. Furthermore, in his works there are the images of urban young girls, quite corner of streets as well as peacefully natural scenes.

From this tradictional material, he also initiates and conducts some experiments of new techniques upon his paintings. Several of these experiments sometimes have given out unexpected result. He sinks himself in art creation and non-stop goes finding “freedom” in Lacquer Painting field that has still considered a traditional branch of  Vietnamese Fine Art.

His studio is in the second floor of 34 Ma May street. Watching the way he works and seeing his works of art, I really feel his concern about art and realise one thing that it is not easy to follow the art and live with it. Artists never satify with their works and going on the art road means that going on a long and open ones.

For him, lacquer is the material of mysterious beauty which is suitable for describing the depth of soul and sadness. Bui Duc works and shows his paintings in his studio. Sometimes, he organises several exhibitions with his sister and brother - famous painters Bui Mai Hien and Bui Minh Tuan - or with others painters.  He is known to be one of persons who have a great contribution for the development of Vietnam contemporary art of lacquer painting.
On the occasion of the Independence Day, from the 9th to 16th September 2007, under the the support of the Vietnammese Ambassy in Singapore in corporation with ASIAN Research Institute, Pacis International co. Ltd will organize an exhibition “the touch of Vietnam” in order to present the Vietnammmese culture and art at the fifth floor, Black Box, National Singaporean Library in 100 Victoria Street Singapore 188064… There will be three representatives coming from 3 regions of Viet Nam: Bui Duc from the North.
