(19-07-2008) by Thu Ngoc HCM CITY — The late painter Nguyen Chuong chose violet-pink nenuphars growing in water to symbolise the beauty of rural girls living in the provinces of his native Cuu Long (Mekong) River Delta. Chuong’s Hoa Sung (Waterlily) is one of 66 paintings and sculptures by artists in the Mekong Delta now on display at the HCM City Fine Arts Association. During his career, Chuong, a native of Dong Thap Province’s Sa Dec town, devoted himself to depicting the culture and lifestyle of the Delta region. |

Sasquatch: Nguyen’s art explores mythical creatures. HCM CITY — An exhibition of 15 paintings inspired by graffiti by Vietnamese-American artist Burt Quoc Nguyen is now on show in HCM City. Unknown Monsters at San Art features images of horrible faces done using watercolours on canvas. For Nguyen, who signs as Tyke Witnes/The Eyewitness on his works, graffiti is like monsters. The feeling when he comes across a graffito hidden between alleyways or clinging to broken walls is akin to seeing a monster revealing itself – magnificent, magical and mysterious. |

(08-07-2008) HA NOI — Work has begun on Viet Nam’s largest ever historical painting, a gift from painter Nguyen Doan Son to the capital for its 1,000th birthday in 2010. The oil painting, entitled Ha Noi, Chien Luy va Hoa (Ha Noi, Defence Works and Flowers), measures 2.15m by 9.3m and will depict moments of history across 10 centuries of Ha Noi life. |

| The ups and downs of life as seen by a Scottish artist |
(01-07-2008) by Le Hong HCM CITY — An exhibition of 14 abstract paintings titled Strikes and Gutters by Scottish artist Daniel Joel Hume is now on at Himiko Visual Cafe in HCM City. "Strikes and Gutters is, for me, an analogy of life," Hume said at the opening last Thursday. "It’s a short phrase spoken in a film by the Coen brothers called the The Big Lebowski. "I suppose it’s a bowling phrase, describing how things in life can be ‘strikes’. "Sometimes you are up and all is well, while at other times things aren’t going your way. It can sum up how you’ve been recently without explaining why."
