| famous vietnamese artist in modernization time "Thanh Chuong" |
Nguyen Thanh Chuong was born in 1949. He began painting at the age of seven and enrolled in the Hanoi Fine Arts College in 1960. During the war he served as an engineer, and when it ended, he began his career as an illustrator for the Literature and Art Weekly Magazine. His current works are primarily lacquer and pigment on wood although he continues to produce some oil on canvas and gouache on cheesecloth works. Many of his bright colored cubist works are inspired by village life and emotions and a number of his paintings have been printed as UNICEF cards and UN stamps. Thanh Chuong has participated in many solo and group exhibitions, both in Vietnam and abroad and his works are widely collected throughout the world.

Formerly the19th century St. Joseph’s Institution building, the Singapore Art Museum premise was gazetted as the national monument with its distinctive grand façade, classical columns and archways, dome and chapel. Much of the essential character of the building is retained after the restoration works, with new frameless glass panels installed for air-conditioning and climate control. |

Introduction Vietnamese art has a long and rich history, the earliest examples of which date back as far as the Stone Age around 8,000 BCE.
With the millennium of Chinese domination starting in the 2nd century BC, Vietnamese art undoubtedly absorbed many Chinese influences, which would continue even following independence from China in the 10th century AD. However, Vietnamese art has always retained many distinctively Vietnamese characteristics.
By the 19th century, the influence of French art took hold in Vietnam, having a large hand in the birth of modern Vietnamese art.

| Famous Vietnamese artist Tran Van Can |
Tran Van Can was born in August 1910 in the northern province of Bac Ninh. He graduated from the Indochina Fine Arts College in 1936. As a student of art, Can was influenced by Josheph Inguimberty (1896-1971), one of the founders of the college. Tran Van Can died in 1994 in Ha Noi at the age of 75.
